Tomorrow's Studio: Sketching in MR to Facilitate On-Site Design

PROJECT
Externalizing ideas is fundamental to design, yet architectural ideas are conventionally represented at a reduced scale and away from their eventual context. This project explores how Mixed Reality can enable designers to sketch spatial ideas directly on-site and at full scale, supporting rapid generation and evaluation of alternatives.

APPROACH
A custom MR sketching environment was developed using Microsoft HoloLens 2, Unity 3D, and MRTK. Designers can rapidly create three-dimensional forms, experience them within the physical site, and modify them with little effort. Applications include the on-site sketching and visualization of indoor and outdoor furniture.

CONTRIBUTION
The project demonstrates how MR can function not only as a visualization medium but as an active design environment, bringing idea generation, spatial experience, and evaluation together within the context being designed. A proof of concept was presented at CAADRIA 2024 in Singapore.
