Visual Impression of Urban Spaces

PROJECT
What makes an urban space feel open, relaxing, exciting, or otherwise distinctive? This project investigates visual impression as a relationship between characteristics of the built environment and human experience, bringing together perspectives that are often studied separately.

APPROACH
The research combines architectural theory, gaze analysis, spatial analysis, and subjective reports. Eye-tracking data are used alongside participants' descriptions of urban environments, allowing patterns of visual attention to be considered in relation to how spaces are perceived and described.

CONTRIBUTION
The multidisciplinary approach provides a framework for connecting measurable properties of visual attention and urban form with the subjective qualities people attribute to places.
