Remote On-site Architectural Design in XR

PROJECT
Architectural design conducted directly on-site can benefit from expertise that is not physically available at the location. This project explored how Extended Reality (XR) can support synchronous remote collaboration for on-site architectural design, connecting designers across geographically separated locations.

APPROACH
A Mixed Reality collaboration system was developed and evaluated through a scenario connecting an on-site designer in Okinawa with a remote collaborator in Tokyo. Using Microsoft HoloLens 2, the collaborators could work together in real time on a building proposal despite being physically separated.

CONTRIBUTION
The project identified opportunities and challenges associated with combining on-site immersive design, remote expertise, and computational support, contributing insights toward future distributed XR environments for architectural collaboration.
