Metaphor-Based Design of Japanese Stone Gardens
PROJECT
Metaphor allows designers to understand one domain through another and can become a powerful generator of spatial ideas. This project investigated whether such reasoning could be formalized computationally through the automatic generation of Japanese rock garden compositions.
APPROACH
A computational design system was developed by integrating a CAD environment with a logical inference system. The work translated metaphor-based design reasoning into computational procedures capable of generating spatial configurations, using Japanese stone gardens as the application domain.
CONTRIBUTION
The project explored how a cognitive mechanism normally associated with human interpretation and creativity could inform automated spatial design, connecting design cognition with generative computation.
